Leakey Collection Jewelry Review

The Leakey Collection is a Fair Trade company that designs and manufactures contemporary jewelry and home decor products. The products are all handmade by the Maasai women and men of Kenya. Founded in 2001 by Philip and Katy Leakey, the Leakey Collection aims to prevent conflict and promote stability by encouraging disadvantaged populations to become participants rather than spectators in their society and economy. All materials used for these products are environmentally sustainable, including Zulugrass beads, fallen Acacia wood and fallen marula nut oil.

The environmentally sustainable harvest of the grass used to make the Zulugrass beads, works to preserve a wetland since the communities no longer burn the grass. The grass was previously burned because the cattle did not eat it. This grass grows with a hole inside of it and is hard and durable. The grass beads are dyed using textile dyes for the Zulugrass jewelry of the Leakey collection, creating over 80 colors that are combined with sparkling Czech and Japanese glass beads. Zulugrass is sold in individual or multistrand necklaces and bracelets, allowing you to mix and match to create the jewelry you desire. It has an earthy organic look yet is completely modern. Zulugrass is waterproof, colorfast and durable.

I received two strands of Zulugrass - one pinkish color and one light green. They really are cute and not only work well separately, but they also look great together! I like how complimentary the Zulugrass jewelry is. And there are over 50 ways to wear Zulugrass - bracelets, belts, anklets, hair accessories, necklace and more. I didn't even realize it until I saw illustrations of all the different ways to wear Zulugrass - even as a ring! The elastic is very durable and stretchy to fit anyone, and the strands are lightweight and water resistant, which makes them even better. I also received two sets of ZuluSport Friendship Bracelets, which is a really cute idea. The package says "Friendship bracelets - Keep one for yourself and give one to your best friend! Together cut the raffia tag connecting the two and each of you make a wish!"

I also received a strand of multicolored Beads for Learning Zulugrass. The Leaky Collection donates 100% of their profits from the sales of these bracelets to pay for local teachers' salaries. Five of these bracelets pays for a teacher's salary for one day. Employing just one extra teacher brings opportunity to hundreds of children and their families. I think it is so great that not only is all the jewelry from the Leakey Collection natural and organic, but every strand that is purchased either helps bring teachers to the African communities or supports the employment of the African women who make the jewelry.

Who would've thought that you could help African communities just by buying jewelry? Well now you can! Zulugrass would make a great gift for the women in your life - it's versatile, beautiful, and each purchase supports a great cause.
